| Part of the Solution . . . |
| The challenge of legally required recycling and minimal use of landfill |
| At Lawrence, at least 80% of the waste we handle is recycled - and we believe we can achieve over 95% within the next few years. Worth doing for its own sake, recycling is often, in effect, a legal requirement, because many substances are prohibited from landfill. |
Whether a company or a private individual, you can be prosecuted if your skip hire company fails to dispose of your waste responsibly. Therefore, as licensed waste carriers and
waste managers, we must ensure that none of the following goes to landfill: |
• |
Electrical white goods |
• |
TV and computer monitors |
• |
Hazardous waste |
• |
Free-draining liquids |
• |
Other |
| Soon, the implementation of the EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive will prohibit all electrical items, from calculators to car radios, from landfill. |
| What are the materials recycled into? |
| The products of recycling vary and, with more sophisticated equipment (see 'The Forge'), more sophisticated products can be produced. At the moment, the key recycled products from our operations are: |
• |
Screened hard core for road building |
• |
Screened soil |
• |
Rubber aggregates for playgrounds |
